Earthquake energy rule of thumb. The biggest recorded earthquake occurred on May 22, 1960 in Chile and measured 9.5 on the Richter scale. A seismology rule of thumb says for each one-point magnitude increase of an earthquake, about thirty-two times more energy is released.
