Hiker’s rule of thumb

Hiker’s rule of thumb. Scottish mountaineer William W. Naismith's rule of thumb for calculating the duration of a hike a route is as follows: for hikers of reasonable fitness, on typical terrain, under normal conditions, allow 1 hour for every 3 miles (5 km), plus ½ hour for every 1,000 feet (300 meters) of ascent.
